What we do

What is osteopathy and can it help me?

What_is_oesteopathy_kentOsteopaths use their hands to treat muscles, ligaments, connective tissue and the skeleton to ensure good structure and function of the body. This is key to the osteopath's role in assisting the body to self-repair and maintain health.

Ensuring that the patient's musculoskeletal system is functioning property is essential in the treatment of a wide range of medical conditions including back pain, arthritic pain, repetitive strain injuries, postural problems due to work, hobbies or pregnancy and sports injuries. The symptoms of many other conditions may also be reduced by osteopathy such as digestive, respiratory or gynaecological illnesses.

Osteopaths treat a diverse range of people from pregnant ladies, babies and children to manual and office workers and older people. The different types of techniques osteopaths have to offer is very useful as it allows a flexible and adaptable treatment approach to suit every individual.

Osteopathic treatment involves stretching, articulation, massage and manipulation to increase the range of movement in all the joints of the body (not only the spine) as well as reducing muscle tension and pain. However, osteopathy is not only about removing pain, we are also concerned with what the underlying cause of the pain is. Whether it is caused by a postural problem, injury or occupation, we aim to help our patients to reduce these strains on the body by treatment as well as by exercise and postural advice.

ARE YOU HAVING DIFFICULTY GETTING OUT AND ABOUT?

WOULD YOU LIKE A LITTLE LESS PAIN AND MORE MOBILITY?

OSTEOPATHY CAN HELP!

As our bodies grow older, it experiences a lot of 'wear and tear' and this can be very painful and restrictive to everyday life. A lot of health advisors say that its just 'your age' and that nothing that can be done to help – it is arthritis and you're stuck with it! Osteopaths do not believe this – we know that although we can not take away the wear in the joints, we can help to reduce the pain that it causes and improve mobility throughout the body. This means that although we cannot remove osteoarthritis (wear and tear), we can help to reduce the impact that it has on your life.

The changes in the body's posture that occurs with age causes a lot of strain to be put on the back, joints and muscles and leads to great deal of pain and stiffness when moving. This can reduce your mobility greatly and prevent you being able to get out and about or stop you enjoying time with your friends and family.

Osteopaths can help the body cope with the strains of the ageing process by gentle stretching and muscle relaxing techniques. Our aim is to guide the joint through its range of movement whilst gently encouraging a greater degree of freedom and less stiffness. The muscles around the affected joint can also be very contracted and painful and therefore gentle stretching techniques will be applied to them to allow them to relax. This muscle relaxation allows the joint to move easier and also reduces the pain from the muscle.

During your visit advice will also be given on gentle stretching techniques that you can do at home to help maintain the mobility the treatment has given you and prevent the pain and stiffness returning. Osteopathic treatment and advice together can improve mobility, ease pain and stiffness and loosen muscles.
