ARE YOU EXPERIENCING ACHES AND PAINS DURING YOUR PREGNANCY?

DO YOU NEED SOME HELP WITH BACK ACHE?

OSTEOPATHY CAN HELP!

As you know, pregnancy causes enormous physical and hormonal changes to occur to your body which it must try to adapt to. Unfortunately, sometimes the body does not cope well with these physical strains and this can lead to pain, discomfort and difficulty coping with everyday life.

As the baby grows, the body's ligaments soften to allow the descent of the baby just before and during birth. However, the fact that the ligaments are softened can also lead to ligament and muscle strain during the pregnancy. As these hormones affect all of the body's soft tissues and not just in the pelvis, it is common for pregnant ladies to experience back ache, neck ache and pains in the legs and rib cage.

Osteopathic treatment during and after pregnancy can help to reduce these aches and pains but also prepare the body for the birthing process. Pregnant ladies with a pelvic imbalance, for example, may benefit from osteopathic treatment. Treatment of the pelvis to attempt to restore it to a more symmetrical position may help the baby's descent prior to and during the birth.

After the birth, the body again experiences a great deal of postural changes as it attempts to restore the pre-pregnancy posture and this can cause further strain on already tired muscles and joints. Also, the positions which new mothers readily find themselves in – feeding, changing and leaning over cots – can further irritate these tissues.

Many new mothers seek osteopathic treatment after the birth to help to relieve their aches and pains and also to assist in maintaining a good posture as they nurse and care for their baby.

Osteopathic treatment during pregnancy is both gentle and safe, it includes gentle stretching and articulation to improve the flexibility of the joints and muscles and soft tissue techniques to release tight muscles and reduce the pain they cause. Advice will also be given on posture and relevant stretching and exercises for you to carry out at home.
